System expansion at UnifixSWG in Italy

08.11.2010

KNAPP completed an automated order processing system in 2008 for UnifixSWG at the distribution centre in Terlan, South Tyrol. This year the decision was made for an expansion, with the goal of further increasing performance in picking and outgoing goods.

The project was executed in two phases, where the latter was implemented in less than three weeks, and was only possible because the schedule was precisely coordinated among all the project partners.

During the first phase another level with container conveying and pick stations was connected by several vertical reversible platform-elevators. KNAPP successfully completed the entire project during on-going warehouse operation and on time.

In order for the targeted increase in picking performance in the first phase to lead to higher performance in outgoing goods, in the second phase the automated small parts system (AKL) was expanded. KNAPP installed a second shuttle in the existing aisle for this purpose. Even though both shuttles are active in the same aisle and run on the same tracks, there is no mechanical separation of the two work areas, meaning that the shuttles can serve all storage locations within reach. Although a pre-zone is assigned to each shuttle, if necessary, a shuttle may be deactivated. The second shuttle can, therefore, keep up with production without problem.

An intelligent positioning controller prevents shuttle collision if they move toward each other with maximum speed (v max along x-axis = 5 m/s; v max along y-axis = 2.5 m/s). Dispatch lines connect directly to the automated small parts system and are supplied directly by the shuttles. The number of pack lines were increased to more efficiently supply the increase in picking performance.

Through the significantly more efficient dispatch buffer – a throughput increase of 90% was reported – the varying workloads during the day can be perfectly buffered and retrieved when needed.

UnifixSWG first installation 2008:

KNAPP completed an automatic picking system in the fall of 2008 at UnifixSWG, a subsidiary of the Würth Group, which has been a valued customer at KNAPP for many years. UnifixSWG is a wholesaler of fastener technology articles and chemical products with company headquarters in Terlan, South Tyrol.

The system completed by KNAPP in 2008 included two picking levels with ten pick stations and an automated small parts system, which functions as intermediate storage as well as a dispatch buffer.
