Warehouse expansion at Roland Meinl Musikinstrumente

17.07.2012

Tray and unit-load sections to be lengthened

Back in December 2007, the new logistics center of musical instruments supplier Meinl had gone live at the “musicians’ paradise” Gutenstetten in Franconia - an important yardstick in the development of the family-run company. But due to the good order situation, warehouse capacity reached its limits as early as in the summer of 2010. Therefore an old warehouse had to be dusted off and returned to use as an interim storage facility. To ensure that Meinl would be able to deliver its products as quickly and reliably as before, the company not only built a new exhibition and multipurpose hall to mark its 60th anniversary, but it also decided to extend its 27-meter (30 yd) high unit-load system and 18-meter (20 yd) high tray section by 30 meters (33 yd).

Now Meinl has over 13,300 tray and 9,328 pallet storage locations – which means that its warehousing capacities have nearly doubled. This was achieved also by choosing a different storage location height for the extension section. While the old system comprises three height classes, there are four of them in the new section. During running operations it became clear that another lower height class was necessary due to Meinl’s large variety of products. Moreover, a load calculation function as required by the FEM 9.841 and FEM 10.210 standards was added to the warehouse management system viad@t to rule out the overloading of storage locations.

So that an up-to-date overview of the number of orders was available at all times, Meinl decided to have the new statistics dialogue “real-time order statistics” installed, which can also be seen on a flat screen in the entrance hall.
