AIV Heilbronn: Hänel and viastore systems optimize the dispatch warehouse

09.01.2013

Management and control of Hänel Lean-Lifts® and the manual warehouse with viad@t

AIV is continually working to improve its internal processes and further increase its range of services. The company recently restructured and expanded its logistics and distribution center in Heilbronn. In so doing, Hänel integrated four Lean-Lifts® into the existing warehouse structure. With a height of 8.50 meters, they exploit the entire height of the warehouse, offering 360 square meters of storage space over only 24 square meters of floor area. That means an enormous savings in precious surface area plus optimum use of the existing warehouse.

That's a crucial advantage for AIV, since the available storage space was increased by around 200 percent!

Thanks to flexible and height-optimized storage in the Hänel Lean-Lift®, up to 3,200 different products can be stored depending on stock level. Some 37,000 articles pass through the dispatch warehouse every day. To control the processes more efficiently, AIV uses the Warehouse Management System viad@t from viastore systems, in conjunction with the existing Navision goods management system. New order-picking jobs are transmitted to viad@t and can be processed in both the automatic and the manual warehouse. The Hänel Lean-Lifts® are operated using the program interface of viad@tWMS.

All products are saved in a database with article number, article designation and other features. When placed into storage, new goods are initially identified using a barcode scanner, and the warehouse inventory is updated for this article. Then the nearest container with a vacant storage space is automatically made ready by the quickest route. If the same product is already located in the lift at a different place, this is taken into account during order-picking and the "older" articles are provided first by the system (first in – first out). Using the storage software, the current stock can be viewed at any time. New products can be incorporated into the system without any problem.

viad@tWMS also controls all operations during retrieval.

The employees can view and edit the appropriate order-picking jobs at the terminals. The control system automatically readies the container with the required article at the push of a button. That means goods-to-man and not the other way round. To prevent order-picking errors, the storage box from which the goods are to be removed is identified in the graphic container overview of viad@tWMS. The Hänel Pick-o-Light® System also supports rapid and reliable order-picking in which a red LED marks the requested article.

In this way the process reliability was increased even more!

The four Hänel Lean-Lifts® are operated parallel by two employees. Thanks to the use of advanced storage systems by Hänel in conjunction with high-performance storage software from viastore systems, the order-picking capacity in comparison with a conventional order-picking warehouse was increased to 180 picks per person and per hour.

Faster goods delivery, improved inventory reliability, minimization of order-picking faults and shortening of the order times are further persuasive advantages.
