Intralogistics by psb sends books on their journey

23.06.2014

After two years of design and implementation, the new distribution center of Kopp Verlag was established in Rottenburg (southwestern Germany). With the sophisticated intralogistics system by psb, the publishing company is shipping up to 6,000 parcels daily. An outstanding project feature is that a zero error quota in the shipped parcels is obtained.

Core business of Kopp Verlag is the sale of books and other media products, about finance, nature and view of life. The writings (partly pusblished by the company itself) are sent to bookstores and end customers. Today, between 3,000 and 6,000 parcels are sent on their journey each day.

For these tasks, and taking into account future business developments, psb designed a new, customized warehousing and order picking system. Due to the increased space demands, the project was realized at a new location. Already in the concept phase the psb planning engineers closely co-operated with the architect: The new building, which has been dimensioned according to psb’s directives, fulfills all intralogistics requirements. A second stage, for the handling of up to 2,000 customer parcels per hour, has already been taken into consideration in the concept.

In the new DC, warehousing and order picking are organized in two main areas. In the first area, fast movers are stored in an automated small parts warehouse and are supplied for picking in flow channels. Frequently demanded articles are provided in fixed channels; less demanded items are made available in dynamic channels. Order picking in the small parts warehouse is done at ten stations. In the other main area, the slow movers are handled in a rotastore carousel storage. The items stored in this area are picked at two workstations by employing sorting racks.

The new concept also includes a manual pallet storage, which is utilized as replenishment warehouse. All processes are controlled by the selektron WMS (Warehouse Management System); the storage aisles are operated by VNA trucks. The customer parcels are finally prepared for shipping at ten packing workstations. 24 hours, at the latest, after an order has been received, the ordered items leave the warehouse.

A constantly changing range of articles and high seasonal fluctuations in incoming orders require a highly flexible handling system. Furthermore, due to the varying number of staff and the employment of seasonal staff, the installed solution had to be easy to operate. A special challenge in the project was to obtain a zero error quota in the shipped parcels. This key request could be realized by the intelligent connection of existing system modules with adapted material flow concepts.

The complete relocation of Kopp Verlag to the new distribution center finally took place at a long weekend. Already at the following Monday, all customer orders, which had come in during that weekend, could be processed and shipped.
