Modern Warehouse Management Systems Help Achieve Better Results

08.11.2011

With today's highly competitive dynamics and business on the warehousing market, an integrated solution is highly needed to effectively manage warehouses.

Various promising management systems that are offered to customers on the dedicated software market can really enhance the performance of warehouse workers as well as reloading equipment.

Losing cargo and failing to deliver it to a customer because it has been transferred to the wrong warehousing cell is troublesome but can be avoided today by Baltika with the aid of up-to-date technologies that help manage finished products throughout the entire warehousing cycle.

The Solvo.WMS warehouse management system designed by SOLVO has the leading position on the warehousing systems market.

"The main advantage of Solvo.WMS is that it is an integrated automation system designed to control warehousing technology processes and to keep records of finished products stored at all of Baltika's warehouses," said Nikolai Bystrov, deputy head of warehousing operations at Baltika. "Before we introduced Solvo.WMS at Baltika, we had no unified warehouse management system. Instead, Excel files were used and edited manually to manage warehousing operations. Obviously, this technique was awkward and difficult to understand. Today Solvo.WMS has been deployed at all of our breweries. Solvo.WMS is configured according to our requirements, thus enabling our warehouses to operate in a unified and coordinated manner.

Solvo.WMS assigns a unique name to each warehouse item. This makes it possible to view item history from the brewery’s manufacturing line, including its movements around the factory and information about the consignee. Moreover, products can be sorted within the warehouse space by different types of packaging, branding or any other parameters.

"In addition to receiving products from the manufacturing line, Solvo.WMS automates the shipping process. Different distributors may have varying deadlines for shipping products to customers. In previous times, these operations were managed manually. After Solvo.WMS was introduced, we were able to apply different rules to handle orders and operations at the warehouse. In doing this, Solvo.WMS automatically informs workers and loader drivers where a specified number of products should be taken and shipped," said Nikolai Bystrov.

As a matter of fact, modern warehouse management technologies make it possible to skip routine paperwork and, instead, harness automatic processing of useful information into individual instructive tasks that are sent to a worker's handheld radio terminal.

In this way, Solvo.WMS improves the operation of the warehouse and considerably cuts down the probability of errors and idle-time periods. As a result, warehousing costs and efforts are reduced a great deal," added Nikolai Bystrov.

"In fact, the Baltika Vena brewery that is based in Saint Petersburg, Russia, was Baltika's first brewery where Solvo.WMS was deployed in 2003," said Vladimir Sergeyev, SCM manager at Baltika. "Today Solvo.WMS has been introduced throughout most of Baltika's factories located in the Baltic region. Furthermore, the system was installed in Yaroslavl and Khabarovsk in 2010. And this year, Solvo.WMS will be deployed in Voronezh. This event will be the final point in the project for automating all of Baltika's breweries."

"At the time Solvo.WMS had been installed at the Vena brewery, management systems of this class were unique to the Russian brewing industry. Over the last eight years, the system used by Baltika has gone through a long process of evolution. It was standardized according to our general logistics processes and, additionally, to each brewery's specific requirements. For example, two-fork lifting trucks capable of lifting two pallets at the same time are used in Cheliabinsk. Solvo.WMS was easily configured to take this advantage into account while planning and processing warehousing operations," said Vladimir Sergeyev and added that further upgrading of the system will surely continue.

It is safe to say that Solvo.WMS allowed Baltika breweries to significantly extend the reach of their product line to new locations and customers and to expand the system's functionality and efficiency over all of Baltika's subsidiaries, meaning that the future has already come to Baltika's warehouses indeed.
