PROLAG®World and a new distribution centre for the market leader in the health and well-being sector

11.07.2012

CIM GmbH commissioned to implement Warehouse Management System for Beurer

With its newly expanded European distribution centre in Uttenweiler, Beurer – market leader in the health and well-being sector – has made the largest investment in its 93-year history. The new warehouse has an area of approximately 10,000 m² and offers enough space for more than 11,000 pallets. In their search for a  comprehensive Warehouse Management System (WMS), the traditional family-run company chose the  Fürstenfeldbruck software house CIM GmbH. CIM’s innovative software PROLAG®World has been in place since May 2012, controlling and coordinating the logistics in all of Beurer’s warehouse locations.

Absolute delivery reliability and stringent standards regarding the quality of their products, which include bathroom and kitchen scales, electric underblankets, heating pads, blood pressure monitors and massage equipment, are a matter of course for Beurer and a prerequisite for operating successfully in the global market. Quality standards go far beyond production, and are just as relevant where in-house logistics and shipping are concerned. Batch traceability, serial number management, EDIFACT compatibility, and goods and parcel tracking right from production through to actual delivery at the customer are essential elements of manufacturing and sales.

To continue to meet their high quality standards in terms of intralogistics and in view of increasing turnover, Beurer has opted for CIM’s innovative Warehouse Management System, PROLAG®World. The software now controls, organizes and manages all the intralogistics processes both in the new distribution centre and in
Beurer’s existing locations: everything from the flow of goods from international production facilities and from their own warehouses and forwarding company warehouses to the new distribution centre, right through to picking, packing and shipping and on to the customer. “Our software PROLAG®World supports all of these functions, which are so crucial in medical technology and production, and is already used by a number of university hospitals and manufacturers of medical devices”, says CIM logistics consultant, Matthias Schüll.

The required retrieval quantity is determined by simulating a reservation and requested from the logistics service provider through the interface. The orders are picked once the goods have been delivered as an SSCC from the external warehouse or the forwarding company’s warehouse.

In multi-step picking, orders (including low volume orders) are combined into a picking run and picked using a forklift control system. Before packing, the pooled orders are divided up again at designated consolidation areas into shipments, packed at the packing areas along with the relevant delivery papers and then dispatched. Automatic replenishment ensures a smooth flow of goods not only from existing locations to the new distribution centre, but also internally within the centre.

Installation of the WMS system has resulted in optimized logistics processes in terms of efficiency and cost-effectiveness: shorter lead times, faster handling and CIM GmbH Logistic-Systems press information, 11.07.2012 quicker turnover times, fast and reliable goods delivery, transparent data management, with batch tracking and full traceability of all individual process steps and routes.

For Jörg Liptow, purchasing and logistics manager at Beurer, and Michael Reichelt, who is head of IT, the key factors were a smooth transfer of data to other software systems and seamless integration of the new WMS into the existing IT infrastructure. The PROLAG®World data converter regulates communication between the
host interface and the enterprise software (SoftM), and controls data exchange with the ERP and warehouse management systems of the relevant forwarding companies. This enables remote data transmission to parcel delivery services and to a number of major clients. For packing, customized labels and shipping  documents for different hauliers are created from PROLAG®World‘s shipping system. When the freight lists and vehicles are complete, the goods and shipping data is communicated to the relevant shipping services.
