viastore is a member of the Blue Competence initiative

14.08.2013

Sustainability is essential. This is the motto of the Blue Competence initiative launched by the German Engineering Federation, VDMA. Working together in this initiative are the various professional associations of the VDMA, other organizations of the machine and plant construction industry as well as individual companies and institutions committed to ecological product development and production and innovative environmental technologies.

More than 380 companies participate in the Blue Competence initiative, including viastore. Sustainability has been a key issue for the Stuttgart-based intralogistics specialist for a long time now.

Take viastore blue, for example: This is the name of an energy saving concept developed by viastore that looks not only at the individual consumers in a warehouse or logistics center, but rather keeps an eye on the entire system. For in intralogistics in particular, there are versatile options to save energy.

The viad@t warehouse management system (WMS) helps, for example, to reduce packaging material and packed air to a minimum by precisely pre-calculating the necessary package size. In many cases, not even ten percent of the cargo capacity of trucks or freight cars is utilized since the secondary packaging or shipping cartons are usually far too large for the transported products. Adequately sized packaging can help to eliminate the need for many additional kilometers of highway, achieve lower CO2 emissions and reduce the volume of waste.

Moreover viad@t can identify storage locations that are at an optimal distance to the next retrieval by means of route-optimized travel strategies. This means it can avoid unnecessary runs for forklift trucks and storage/retrieval machines (SRM). What’s more, SRMs from viastore use the energy released during the braking of the base unit and the lowering of the hoist unit via a DC link connecting the frequency converters. The braking energy generated on the SRM while lowering the hoist unit is made available for accelerating the base unit, and vice versa. Alternatively, the released energy can be fed back into the power grid.

Based on verifiable criteria, the Blue Competence sustainability initiative denotes members, participants and partners as sup pliers of environmentally compatible solutions that are energy and resources-efficient, in line with market requirements and help to improve the quality of living. Many such solutions are successfully offered in the field of intralogistics today. These are instrumental in helping companies to save energy and make an important contribution towards economic efficiency and effective environmental protection.
