WMS vendors set sail on a course to success with warehouse logistics

06.11.2013

“On a course to success with warehouse logistics” was the slogan used by Team warehouse logistics to invite participants of the WMS Database to attend the thirteenth annual meeting held on 15 October 2013 at the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics IML in Dortmund.

More than 60 representatives from national and international companies in the WMS industry took advantage of this opportunity to learn about the latest trends and developments in the field of logistics and discuss them in the World Café.

The thirteenth annual participant meeting of the warehouse logistics portal set sail with the dynamic and forward-looking keynote speech by Professor Dr. Michael ten Hompel, the Managing Director of Fraunhofer IML, about the relevance of German logistics research and the development of software and systems. He used the examples of the cloud and the Internet of Things to impress on the guests how quickly innovations become established in the market. After the keynote speech, the WMS community set its course to learn about the trends and developments of the WMS Database. This information was provided by Tim Geißen, project manager for the continued development and internationalization of Team warehouse logistics, as he reported on the latest news from the team and the continued expansion of the database. In addition to a service for validating WMS reference projects, which was launched in 2012 and has since been fully implemented, there is also now a “stock exchange” for final papers, which makes it possible for WMS vendors to incorporate students working on final projects or papers into their own research activities.

After a short stop in the open ID centre, it was “all hands on deck” for a compelling round of discussions in the World Cafés, which made its debut at the meeting last year. In small groups, the participants were given the chance to share their ideas and discuss their experiences about current logistics topics such as “WMS und Business Suites”, “Value Added Services, and “Returns Management and Ecommerce” as well as “Lean Warehousing” and “Business Intelligence”.

“The 2013 Participant Meeting was a big success. The intensive discussions of the topics and the candour of the guests in the World Café have motivated us once again to gather momentum together with the WMS vendors and shape the future of logistics”, concluded Detlef Spee, head of the Department of Intralogistics and IT planning, at the end of the participant meeting.

Martin Böhmer and Mathias Tilp rounded out the meeting with presentations on “Business Objects” and “Trends and Developments in the WMS market”. The validation certificates were awarded after a presentation on the outlook for the next few years.

The participant meeting received positive feedback again this year and helped strengthen the networking character of the WMS community. Guests gave special praise to the ability to exchange ideas in the World Café, the intensive networking opportunities, and the informative presentations.

At the end of the event, Dr. Jochen Fuhrmann of AEB GmbH commended the “good mixture of the exchange of experiences and new trends” and was very pleased that “not only were representatives able to scrutinize their own company strategies but they also got to enrich their visions of the future”. Horst Reichert of S&P Computersysteme GmbH was just as positive in his praise: “The warehouse logistics community and this event have almost become a surrogate manufacturer association for WMS.” More praise came from Fin Geldmacher of prismat GmbH in his comment that “the exchange between the participants and the Team warehouse logistics helps companies with their classification and strategic orientation in the market.” Dr. Alexander Ulbrich of Jungheinrich AG found his experience in the World Café to be extremely helpful because “different perspectives and ways of interpreting certain concepts became clear during the discussion of different topics: These insights help us present sensitive topics to our customers”.

The world’s largest database for warehouse managements systems on warehouse-logistics.com provides customers with access to all of the important information they need for sustainable warehouse planning. WMS Online Selection gives users a functional overview of more than 100 systems and numerous ways to compare those systems. By listing their systems in the WMS Database on warehouse-logistics.com, WMS vendors can acquire new customer bases. The annual validation process guarantees the quality of the listed systems using an extensive questionnaire that covers more than 3 000 aspects. WMS vendors can also submit completed projects for validation as references.
