Jungheinrich implements logistics centre with fully automated high rack warehouse for HEWI G. Winker

02.08.2016

HEWI, a company specialising in nut connector systems, commissions Jungheinrich as general contractor for intralogistics including Warehouse Management System (WMS) · 3-aisle high rack pallet storage system contains 9,888 storage slots · Fully automated production supply and removal system uses six Auto Pallet Movers (APM)

Based in the German town of Spaichingen, HEWI G. Winker, a specialist for locknuts and connectors, is investing 15 million euros in a new production and logistics building with 13,340 square metres of built-over space. After a ground-breaking ceremony in early July, the company’s »Plant No. 2« in Spaichingen is set to launch production operations in autumn of 2017. HEWI has commissioned Jungheinrich to implement the project as its general contractor for intralogistics. To realise the project Jungheinrich – one of the world’s leading providers in the field of materials handling, warehouse and material flow technology – will draw on major elements of its comprehensive product portfolio, including automated logistics systems, automated and manual industrial trucks and software.

The Jungheinrich solution for the HEWI location includes a three-aisle silo-type high bay warehouse for pallet storage – 25 metres high and 57 metres long with a total of 9,888 pallet slots. Jungheinrich will implement not just the high rack system for double-depth pallet storage, but also the roof, wall and platform construction. The scope of services moreover includes three stacker cranes with a performance capacity of 93 double runs per hour from Jungheinrich subsidiary MIAS as well as automated pallet conveyor technology. The control technology for the automated storage system as well as the conveyor technology including warehouse management and material flow computers will be installed by the specialists at Jungheinrich Systemlösungen GmbH based in Graz, Austria.

Six Jungheinrich Auto Pallet Movers (APM) will be used to supply raw materials to the production area as well as to transport production bins containing finished products back to the warehouse. These ERC 215a automated guided vehicles will be connected with the Jungheinrich WMS via the Jungheinrich Logistics Interface. To support the transport of incoming and outgoing goods as well as other internal transport tasks, Jungheinrich is delivering five ERC 216z electric pedestrian controlled stackers. The introduction of a stacker control system will furthermore help optimise the utilisation of existing vehicle fleet capacity in Plant No. 1, where seven million nuts and extruded parts are produced daily.

In the words of Thomas Gruber, Project Manager at Jungheinrich Logistiksysteme: »This solution was designed from the very beginning to support the expansion of the warehouse and production areas as soon as the client should require greater capacity. This means both the high bay warehouse as well as the conveyor technology and APM system can be precisely expanded to match the new requirements. Our comprehensive solutions expertise in intralogistics, where we can offer everything from a single source with optimum compatibility as well as the individual scalability of systems were a key motivator for HEWI in selecting Jungheinrich as the general contractor for this project.«

And HEWI Managing Director Markus Hänssler comments: »Our new plant in Spaichingen lays the basis for our future successful business development. The new location has growth reserves which will allow us to double our current sales volume.«
