Contract logistics provider expands partnership with EPG: Fiege installs LFS.wms for food

03.09.2019

The Fiege Group has been handling the logistics activities of a large, global food manufacturer at its multi-user site in Rangsdorf since 1991. 3,000 to 4,000 pallets leave the 48,000 m2 distribution center every day.

Until now, the Group used its own warehouse management system to control the internal material flow. But Fiege recently decided to switched to the LFS.wms warehouse management system from the Ehrhardt + Partner Group (EPG). Switching has allowed more flexible picking strategies to be implemented and provided better coverage for different storage units. Using LFS.wms and a new consolidation concept have also helped to increase provisioning capacity by 30 percent.

The Fiege Group is one of the leading logistics service providers in Europe. From production and acquisition logistics through intralogistics to the distribution of goods, the contract logistics provider offers its customers the full range of services from a single source. In Rangsdorf, Fiege handles the storage, picking, packing and transport of products, such as hot beverages, chocolate, cereal and other products, for a large food company. Fiege has been using a warehouse management system from the food manufacturer to manage the logistics processes since 1994, which has now been replaced by EPG's LFS.wms warehouse management system for strategic reasons. »We suggested LFS.wms to our customer, because we already have had good experience with the solution in Rangsdorf and at other sites. We worked closely together with representatives from our customer and EPG to ensure the project was implemented successfully and on-time,« reports Susanne Pauli, head of the Rangsdorf branch.

Additional LFS modules in use

One reason that Fiege chose LFS.wms was the great flexibility of the system. In contrast to the previous solution, the new solution can control and manage both the manual and the automatic storage area with a total of approx. 950 items. Another advantage of using LFS.wms is that Fiege can put a range of different picking strategies into practice, such as dynamic picking in the automatic warehouse. The warehouse management system also makes a route-optimized picking process possible. On top of that, LFS.wms provides greater transparency with end-to-end item management all the way to the end customer. »LFS.wms puts us in a great position for the future and for future logistics requirements. For example, we could easily integrate a stacker control system, if needed,« says Susanne Pauli. In Rangsdorf, Fiege also uses two additional LFS modules for its customer in the food industry. The precalculation of shipping HUs module allows for precise planning and optimization of the load in individual shipping HUs, taking into account the maximum allowed weights and volumes, while the freight capacity calculation module makes the best possible use of the available freight capacity.
