New high-bay warehouse in Aachen chocolate plant

29.02.2012

Lindt & Sprüngli relies on Kardex Mlog for logistics

The Swiss chocolatier Lindt & Sprüngli is extending and refurbishing its logistics centre at its Aachen site. As a general contractor for the logistics work, Kardex Mlog is, among other things, coordinating the construction of the new fully automated high-bay warehouse with 13,700 pallet storage locations and four MSingle storage and retrieval machines.

Lindt & Sprüngli, a world leading supplier of premium chocolates, produces a range of high quality chocolate bars and pralines in Aachen. In 2011 the company launched a series of investments and projects at its manufacturing sites, including the current refurbishment and extension at the German site.
In parallel with the construction of the new high-bay warehouse, the existing warehouse and conveyor system are being refurbished and integrated into the new material flow control system.

Kardex Mlog has already completed numerous projects in the confectionery industry and is therefore familiar with the special requirements of chocolate production – for example, in terms of food safety.
In Aachen, Kardex Mlog collaborated with its associate company Kardex Stow, the supplier of the racking system. Together they created a four-aisle fully automated high-bay warehouse with 13,700 pallet storage locations for the storage of semi-finished and finished products – the first of its type on the site.

Automation of warehouse operations

Until now storage and retrieval had been carried out in the existing warehouse solely with fork-lift trucks, although transport took place via a fully automated conveyor line. This is being refurbished and extended as part of the overall concept and incorporated into the new material flow control system.
Kardex Mlog is installing four MSingle A storage and retrieval machines from its in-house manufacturing facility in the new high-bay warehouse. The 16 metre high machines have double-deep load handling devices, are equipped with an intermediate circuit connection and are characterised by high energy efficiency.
The new high-bay warehouse will also be provided with its own separate despatch area. System control is also provided via the warehouse management control system, this too being implemented by Kardex Mlog.
The existing warehouse will also be integrated into the overall concept. In the course of the refurbishment and extension of the conveyor system, Kardex Mlog will install approximately 300 drives.
The project started in January 2012 and commissioning is planned for August of this year.
