CLAAS with new automatic mini-load system

11.02.2013

Large warehouse for small parts

Another milestone in automation of the warehouse logistics for the company CLAAS Selbstfahrenden Erntemaschinen GmbH (CSE) in Harsewinkel has been reached: after nine months of preparation, the automatic mini-load system in the goods reception area was opened. This enables an increasing number of different parts to be stocked, a situation that was no longer possible with the storage locations of the manual shelf system. Integration of the systems and supply of the viad@t Warehouse Management Software was done by viastore systems GmbH headquartered in Stuttgart.

"The new turnover machine has two shelf aisles, 55 meters long, up to eight meters high and each equipped with an automatic storage and retrieval machine", says Dietmar Düsing, responsible for Supply Chain Management at CSE. The facility was built on the same area used by its manually operated predecessor. It enabled the storage capacity to be approximately doubled, and the turnover speed to be considerably increased. The total storage capacity is now 12,544 storage shelves, meaning space for some 32,000 containers of varying sizes.

The two viaspeed XL automatic storage and retrieval machines pass through the shelf aisles at up to 140 times an hour, setting down containers with newly delivered parts and picking up other parts needed for production. The facility is rated for 5,000 container movements per day. The S/R machines then move at speeds of up to five meters per second, with load units which together weigh up to 60 kilograms.

Herbert Hischer, head of Supply Chain Management/Material Storage and Transport, presents the functions for storage and retrieval. The two workstations are equipped with scanners, monitors and label printers. The employees are assisted by a visual guide. This ensures almost error-free order picking.

Construction of the warehouse began in September 2011. The facility was functioning by February 2012. The official inauguration was in July.
