Driving innovation with »warehouse logistics« in the market for Warehouse Management Systems

26.10.2018

On 25th October 2018, more than 60 company representatives from national and international WMS providers met at the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics IML in Dortmund. Under the motto »Driving innovation with warehouse logistics«, they informed themselves about current trends and innovative developments in logistics and Warehouse Management Systems (WMS).

With a varied programme of lectures, discussions and innovation pitches, the participants were able to take along new impulses for practice. In particular, the opportunity for joint exchange on industry-specific topics was highly appreciated by the participants of the 18th industry meeting of the »warehouse logistics«-community. Among the topics discussed this year, were the ideal implementation sequence for Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems and WMS as well as a possible optimization of warehouse operations through machine learning in WMS.

Kira Schmeltzpfenning, professional leadership of the Team warehouse logistics at Fraunhofer IML, puts the exchange between the WMS providers in the foreground at the annual industry meeting: »Every year I am pleased to see the lively and open exchange among the WMS providers who otherwise act as competitors and to be able to enrich it with an innovative program«.

With presentations on the research areas of Warehouse IT, the scientists from the Fraunhofer IML, the Fraunhofer Institute for Software and Systems Engineering ISST and the associated Chair of Materials Handling and Warehousing (FLW) at the Technical University of Dortmund gave the participants an outlook on the potential within the WMS industry, which has hardly been tapped to date. Within the framework of the Innovation Market Place, they made clear how important it is to face the challenges of digitization and to invest in progress.

In addition, two guest speakers enriched the industry meeting this year: Jelmer van der Gaast from the University of Groningen offered the participants an insight into his research results on dynamic batching for order picking. In addition, Roman Kucza from IdentPro GmbH extended the research-related event program with his presentation of laser localization with a solid practical report.

The transfer of knowledge, the combination of research and practice as well as the opportunity to experience innovative logistical developments up close, has made the participants' meeting of the »warehouse logistics«-community to a fixed point for many WMS providers.

About »warehouse logistics«

The platform is one of the world’s leading portals for Warehouse Management Systems and provides costumers the access to all important information for a sustainable planning and the right use of their information technology in the warehouse. By the portal, WMS users learn essential information on the various systems and have the possibility for a direct comparison of these systems. Based on the WMS Online Selection, WMS users have the chance to make a targeted selection in consideration of their individual profile of requirements and find the right software for their own needs. Through their participation in the WMS database, WMS vendors can present their company and their WMS at warehouse-logistics.com and develop new customer circles. In addition, the WMS vendors have the chance to let their completed projects be validated as reference projects through one of the experts of the Team warehouse logistics.
