When speed matters: MISUMI uses LFS.wms to manage 20 million special components

30.09.2019

Same-day delivery and batch size 1: MISUMI, the leading supplier of mechanical components for special machine construction and assembly automation, has long recognized the rapid development in the supplier industry – and is positioning itself accordingly for the future.

At its own logistics center near Frankfurt Airport, the company uses the LFS.wms warehouse management system from the Ehrhardt + Partner Group (EPG) to manage more than 140,000 parts in its warehouse and up to 20 million components in its online shop. The warehouse management system meets all the requirements for MISUMI's highly dynamic business: Flexibility, transparency and headroom for further growth. For an overview of all warehouse data at all times, the company also uses LFS.timesquare, EPG's intelligent control center. MISUMI thereby benefits from a longterm, economical solution for the all its logistics on the agile European market.

Being a one-stop shop is at the core of MISUMI's proposition. The company's online platform allows designers to configure components directly online, download the designs as CAD models – and order the parts immediately. This also includes third-party products, alongside its own products delivered from Japan. LFS.wms maps this huge range. MISUMI keeps more than 140,000 standard components in stock for same-day shipping. Individual make-to-order (MTO) components are available worldwide from a batch size 1 and can be shipped within four days. LFS.wms manages the MTO parts using the traditional cross-docking principle. The goods are manufactured at the main center in Asia according to customer requirements. Using LFS.wms, MISUMI now knows the order status at all times – significantly increasing efficiency and reducing the error rate steadily, as the system provides traceability too.

Two halls, one LFS.wms

The logistics center has two halls: A shelved racking system and an automated small parts warehouse, which is currently still under construction. As soon as the automated small parts warehouse is complete, the traditional fast movers will be transferred from the shelved racking system and dispatched from the automated small parts warehouse. »With LFS.wms, we now have a system that will support our very time-critical and specific business into the long term,« says Jörg Gonnermann, General Manager Logistics Service Platform at MISUMI. »We know at all times what's happening in the warehouse. We no longer need to waste effort double-checking orders. That saves an enormous amount of time and we can meet the high demands of the market«. The automated small parts warehouse is scheduled to go live by March 2020. In addition to LFS.wms, MISUMI has recently started using EPG's LFS.timesquare intelligent control center to provide an overview of all warehouse data from the past, present and future in a central system. Further steps for optimization, such as the introduction of the Lydia® Voice pick-by-voice solution, are already being planned.
