Supply Chain Platform Helps TFG Secure Award Win for Supply Chain Excellence

01.11.2010

South African retail giant wins Gold at LAA awards thanks to a number of initiatives led by its logistics team including a successful roll-out of Manhattan Associates' WMS

Manhattan Associates customer TFG (formerly known as The Foschini Group), the South African fashion and lifestyle retail giant, has won gold at the 2010 Logistics Achiever Awards (LAA) for the success its logistics team, TFG Logistics, has had in driving supply chain process improvements and delivering significant business benefits across its extensive retail and distribution operations in South Africa.

The impressive results were achieved through a number of initiatives led by the TFG Logistics team including a successful roll-out of Manhattan Associates' Warehouse Management solution (WMS), as well as an in-house logistics employee empowerment program and a lead-time reduction project. The award win coincided with the retailer's latest go-live with Manhattan's WMS at the company's flagship brand Foschini. The company's Markham and exact! divisions went live with Manhattan's WMS earlier this year. Local supply chain consultancy and Manhattan GeoPartner Supply Chain Junction also played an instrumental role in the WMS deployment project.

This year's awards, the 22nd in the history of the Annual Logistics Achiever Awards, were presented at a ceremony held at The Emperor's Palace in Johannesburg. The awards recognize professionalism and excellence in the effective application of strategic, tactical, and operational logistics and supply chain management principles, concepts, and practices in Southern Africa.

Jan Tukker, group logistics director at TFG, commented, "As a direct result of the Manhattan system deployment and the process improvements we have made, we've been able to reduce logistics lead times from 17 to 4.9 days in the distribution centers; reduce DC stockholding levels by 64 percent; improve overall delivery conformance by 11.5 percent and we've measured DC pick accuracy consistently at 99.9 percent. This and the other logistics enhancement initiatives we've undertaken have delivered a 10.1 percent reduction in the overall cost of logistics as a percentage of turnover, and this at a time when cost inflation has been running at around 6 percent."

Tukker continued, "Four years ago, the TFG Board identified supply chain improvement as a top priority. The LAA award is testament to the hard work of our logistics team, to the strength of processes we have put into place and to the quality of the people and technologies at our partners including Manhattan Associates and Supply Chain Junction. These processes, people and technologies have come together and enabled us to pursue a path of continuous innovation and improvement to meet the Board's objective."

Steve Smith, senior vice president, EMEA, at Manhattan Associates, added, "I'd like to congratulate Jan and TFG's Logistics Team for winning this key award. This is a fantastic achievement and is fully deserved for the way in which the team has gone about planning and executing this multi-year, multi-faceted supply chain re-engineering exercise. I'm also proud of the role that both Manhattan and Supply Chain junction have played in helping TFG to improve the performance of its supply chain and the contribution we have made in helping TFG to win this award. We look forward to continuing to support TFG and its various brand operations in the months and years ahead."
