SSI Schaefer leads Turkish industry leader Ispak Ambalaj to new heights

25.09.2017

Istanbul-based firm Ispak Ambalaj has appointed SSI Schaefer as the general contractor to create a fully automated high bay warehouse at its new manufacturing plant in Izmit, Turkey. Further automation solutions at the logistics facility have also been discussed by the two partners.

Ispak is the leading Turkish flexible packaging manufacturer of paper, aluminum, foil and plastic film. The company offers fully printed packaging solutions for every sector, including the food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, medical and tobacco industries. Founded in 1974, the firm exports its products to 35 countries around the world. Ispak is part of Kibar Holding, which employs roughly 7500 people in 21 different companies active in a wide range of sectors, such as the automotive supply industry.

On an industrial estate in Izmit, the administrative center of Turkey's Kocaeli region situated some 75 km south-east of Istanbul, the manufacturer is currently building a new packaging manufacturing plant complete with printery. To accommodate the semi-finished and finished goods that will be needed, a new fully automated high bay warehouse (HBW) is planned, which will be connected to the manufacturing facility. At the start of 2017, SSI Schaefer won the order to plan, construct and equip the logistics center.

The intralogistics specialist will erect a two-aisle HBW that is more than 30 m high. With double-deep storage, the planned rack construction will offer 10,000 pallet storage locations. Two Exyz storage-retrieval machines (SRMs) from SSI Schaefer, each 29 meters high, will allow pallets weighing up to 1,500 kg to be stored and retrieved quickly and in an energy-efficient manner. SSISchaefer is also installing the pallet conveying system needed to automate the complex internal material flows for supplying the production lines with materials, as well as removing any waste. Furthermore, the WAMAS® logistics software from SSI Schaefer will coordinate the transparent warehouse processes. By visualizing the logistics processes on a dashboard, the installation's productivity can be analyzed in real time, permitting constant optimizations of the system's performance. The end of 2017 has been slated as the agreed target date for the handover of the turn-key system.

In addition to this project, Ispak is planning further automation solutions. The manufacturer, which won a »WorldStar Award 2017« in the Food category from the World Packaging Organization (WPO) in November 2016, would like to automate the supply and removal of materials to and from the production lines. Among the solutions that have been envisaged for further expansion phases are automated guided vehicles (AGVs), which will serve the production machines. Suitable optimization options, which SSI Schaefer covers with its range of AGV products, are already being planned.
