TRUMPF inaugurates new logistics centre

24.10.2017

TRUMPF officially inaugurated its new logistics centre at its Ditzingen headquarters on 19 October 2017. Over the past two years, the high tech company has invested around 40 million euros in the newbuild, necessitated by strong Group growth and the related increase in storage capacity needs. io-consultants served as lead consultant right from the start.

With more than 30,000 stockable materials and around 1,000 daily shipments, the central warehouse in Ditzingen is now TRUMPF’s pivotal hub for global logistics. Conveniently located with easy access to the A81 motorway, it supplies end customers, service organisations, and subsidiaries with TRUMPF spare parts. The majority of shipments reach their destination by the next morning. »The extraordinary flexibility in warehouse processes together with selective automation technology ensures high responsiveness while simultaneously improving throughput times,« says Adrian Siegler, member of the management board/partner at io-consultants. All these factors help TRUMPF to better satisfy the growing needs of its international customers.

Stock control incorporates rush order processing – a key customer requirement – and a smart combination of automated and manual warehouse processes enables flexible responses to order fluctuations and changing circumstances. A new warehouse management system based on SAP EWM is directly connected to the automated warehouse to ensure optimal response times. Simultaneous data and material flows across the whole intralogistics chain will help TRUMPF to maximise process transparency. Sven Müller, head of spare parts logistics at TRUMPF says: »We went live half a year ago and already know more about the processes in our new warehouse than we ever knew about those in the old one.«

The new building is twenty metres high, spans 13,000 sqm, and is equipped with the latest warehouse and picking technology systems. Besides the automatic small parts storage with more than 23,000 container storage places for fast-moving parts, there are also manual shelving racks on four levels for small and medium-sized parts, and various pallet racks for large and bulky products. Around 1,700 sqm of the newbuild have been allocated as office space. A fitness studio is currently being planned on the top of the building, as is already the case at other TRUMPF sites. The corresponding building-related provisions were already taken into consideration during the construction phase.

TRUMPF and io-consultants began their cooperation several years before the actual implementation phase in 2015. In 2012, they jointly developed the general strategy and initial concept, and two years later, io-consultants helped TRUMPF with the detailed planning and tender processes of the logistics and IT subcontractors, and construction-related planning activities. The implementation phase of the new logistics centre ended with the go-live at the end of March 2017. It was followed by ramp-up supervision by io-consultants through to the official opening ceremony.
