Jungheinrich Unveils New Battery-Powered Pedestrian Stacker

16.02.2011

In spring 2011 Jungheinrich will launch a new battery-powered pedestrian stacker. The truck will be officially unveiled to an international trade audience at CeMAT 2011 in Hanover, Germany.

The new Jungheinrich ERC 212/214/216 tiller operated truck combines the manoeuvrability of an electric pedestrian stacker with the benefits of quick and comfortable stand-on operation. Based on a completely redesigned platform, the truck is already on sale on the market in the run-up to CeMAT 2011.

Individual speed concepts allow for greater flexibility

The engineers at Jungheinrich were able to implement a variety of speed concepts in the development of this new electric pedestrian stacker generation. Offering a maximum speed of six kilometres per hour, these trucks are envisaged for use primarily as pedestrian stackers and occasionally for stand-on operations over short distances.

The high-performance model in the ERC series, featuring integrated side-guards that protect the operator on the stand-on platform when taking corners, is predestined for long-distance transport tasks. This model reaches speeds of up to nine kilometres an hour with stand-on operation. “This represents a 20 percent improvement over the previous series,” says Stefan Hirt, Head of Pedestrian Truck Product Management at Jungheinrich.

All versions of the new Jungheinrich pedestrian stacker generation feature a stand-on platform with easy-on-the-back cushioning. When switching from rider to pedestrian operation, the stand-on platform is simply folded up – this automatically reduces the maximum speed to four kilometres an hour. “At this speed the versatility of our new generation of pedestrian stackers jumps dramatically,” adds Stefan Hirt. Compared with the previous series, residual capacity has been boosted by up to 25 percent.

Electric steering now standard feature

The electric steering already included as standard in many Jungheinrich diesel-powered trucks, is now also standard in the new series. According to Stefan Hirt, “This makes the steering extremely smooth, which in day-to-day work is greatly appreciated by the operator.” The electric steering is also particularly useful in situations in which only a light touch works best, for instance, when manoeuvring in confined areas in the warehouse. Thanks to Curve Control the maximum speed when taking corners is automatically throttled down, depending on the cornering angle.

The new ERC 212/214/216 series is outfitted with a pump controller and pump motor that deliver proportional lifting and lowering. Compared with the standard features of the earlier generation, this means even better lifting and lowering sensitivity as well as reduced energy consumption. Thanks to these new features, the noise emissions generally associated with lifting and lowering are perceptibly minimised. A special option available for this Jungheinrich truck automatically reduces the lowering speed when depositing the payload on the ground. “This means the operator can set the payload down smoothly and carefully,” notes Stefan Hirt. The new control tiller on the ERC has been fitted with rocker switches sealed to IP 65 to make them resistant to dust and moisture.

The electric pedestrian stacker comes equipped with the latest generation of Jungheinrich’s tried-and-tested 3-phase AC technology. In demanding, day-to-day operations the powerful 24V 3-phase AC motor (2.8 kW) ensures an even greater increase in throughput. The new ERC can be outfitted with a side-loading battery, which is especially practical for multi-shift operations. An optional integrated charger also makes it possible to charge the battery easily and reliably by plugging it into any 230V mains socket.

Jungheinrich ranks among the world’s leading companies in the material handling equipment, warehousing and material flow engineering sectors. The company is a service provider with manufacturing operations as well as an intralogistics solution provider, which offers its customers a comprehensive range of forklift trucks, shelving systems, services and consulting. Jungheinrich shares are traded on all German stock exchanges.
