Urban Outfitters chooses Vanderlande Industries to integrate automated material handling system in new Reno E-commerce Distribution Center.

Urban Outfitters, one of the world’s leading lifestyle specialty retailers and direct to consumer marketers, has chosen Vanderlande Industries to integrate an automated material handling system at their new Direct to Consumer fulfillment center in Reno, Nevada.

The project is expected to be completed in the second half of 2012. Urban is building the new distribution center to service the expanding direct to consumer market, and chose Vanderlande for its expertise in designing and integrating material handling systems suited to serve the direct to consumer market.

“We were impressed with Vanderlande’s ability to improve upon our initial design without feeling the need to over-engineer it”, said Ken McKinney, Executive Director of Logistics for Urban Outfitters, Inc. “Vanderlande used a very flexible approach and demonstrated a desire to understand our business needs and our culture to provide us with the appropriate end-to-end automated material handling solution to meet those needs.”

Vanderlande’s design team uses a philosophy of maximizing ROI (Return On Investment) by providing unique conceptual solutions, and a pragmatic approach towards investment. With years of warehousing and distribution experience with fashion and e-commerce companies, Vanderlande is able to provide material handling solutions that match the unique distribution requirements for these companies wanting to expand their direct to consumer offering.

The project features Vanderlande’s .M conveyor line, CROSSORTER 700, and POSISORTER. In conjunction with Vanderlande’s in house Warehouse Control system, these products can be mixed and matched to suit the needs of companies with distribution challenges. “Vanderlande’s system engineering team utilized best-in-practice methodologies to design a system that maximizes return on investment for Urban Outfitters, allowing incremental capacity in the Distribution Center that is consistent with Urban Outfitters growth requirements, and featuring a phased approach to capital expenditure”, said Andy Williams, Business Development Manager for Vanderlande Industries NA.
