Fit for the future – Holistic warehouse modernization through integration of AutoStore at Siedle

02.09.2020

io-consultants has developed a new design for S. Siedle & Söhne’s central warehouse in Furtwangen and integrated their material flow control and other new processes into the existing SAP WM world.

The consultancy company drew up a comprehensive modernization plan for Siedle, then guided the company through the implementation phase. Both conversion work and AutoStore installation were carried out during ongoing operations. The ramp-up began in May 2020 with the final acceptance taking place at the end of July 2020.

S. Siedle & Söhne is a seventh-generation Black Forest family business that manufactures building communication technology. In 2018, Siedle decided to modernize its warehouse processes and technology. »A change in logistics was essential so we could meet the needs both of our customers and production with regard to warehouse reliability and performance,« says Rainer Broghammer, Logistics Manager at Siedle. »In addition, space utilization had to be optimized to relieve the high-bay warehouse – ideally without major structural changes and with a moderate level of investment,« Broghammer continues.

In particular, the existing small parts warehouse had reached the limits of its storage and retrieval machines (SRM) when production needed to be switched to order-related supply. After assigning io-consultants’ logistics and IT specialists, the first step was a fundamental analysis of all data and processes. »A comprehensive modernization plan was created based on the range of articles, stock levels, order structure and the resulting peak loads. Taking into account Siedle’s objectives, we presented the Black Forest company with various storage options, setting out both advantages and disadvantages,« explains Fabian Hesebeck, project manager at io consultants.

After considering all the factors important to Siedle, they decided in favor of an integrated Pick&Pack concept based on the AutoStore system to replace their somewhat ageing small parts warehouse. »Thanks to the flexible processes provided by AutoStore, the strain on the capacity and performance of our existing HBW will be significantly relieved in the future. The modified layout and the space gains make it now possible to consolidate orders for delivery to production. The new material flow control for the high-bay warehouse, integrated as an add-on in SAP WM, allowed us to reduce interfaces and be less dependent on external suppliers. By redesigning all goods flows we could significantly improve transparency and throughput times and increase the overall performance of the entire system. The AutoStore system fits ideally into our existing structures,« says Broghammer with satisfaction.

The new AutoStore warehouse was launched during ongoing operations in May 2020 with material flow control and all other logistical and organizational processes being adapted. As an impartial planning partner, io-consultants specializes in taking a holistic approach to all production and logistics processes as well as IT and architecture to identify strategies that will uphold in the future. »It is vital not only to look at one section of logistics, but to include all technical, organizational and IT-relevant aspects – for today and for the future. It is the only way to make the most of all the potential and develop and implement an economical and future-proof operation together with – and for – the customer,« summarizes Martin Bitz, partner at io-consultants and responsible for integrating AutoStore into the SAP environment.
