SOLVO rolls out an automated crane operator workstation add-on program

SOLVO has recently developed and tested an innovative add-on program: an automated STS-crane operator workstation. The program is installed on a mobile computer in the operator's cabin, which is then integrated with the Solvo.TOS operating system while a connection is established via a radio channel. The program works in real-time, issuing tasks to the crane operator and providing all the information needed to ensure that container operations are carried out without disruption. After the crane operator logs into the system, the mobile computer screen will display a list of task available. Each task will contain information about the given container loading/unloading operation for a specific bay. The tasks are grouped based on their order of execution (top down). The work screen will display a section of the vessel. Containers that are assigned for processing (loading or unloading) as well as the queued containers will be displayed on the screen in accordance with the container loading/unloading plan. The top down angle is the default view; however, it is also possible to work with a side view that can help pinpoint container allocation in cells, tiers and on the deck of specific bays. The work screen displays the vessel name, container position on the vessel, bay number, row number, from which containers must be discharged, as well as the number of containers that must be discharged. The task-assigned containers are highlighted with a unique color in the interface. Container discharging is performed in the following manner: the crane operator unloads the container onto the dock area in accordance with the task, where the tallyman receives (registers) the container into the Solvo.TOS operating system. The management system updates the number of containers remaining to be unloaded and assigned the next container that is to be processed based on the discharging plan. After all containers have been unloaded, the crane operator will move onto the next task. The loading screen form is similar to the discharging form with the difference being the existence of a queue (pool) for containers that are ready or waiting to be loaded as well as the work algorithm. The screen displays numbers of containers that are ready for loading (placed under the crane and received by the tallyman) as well as locations on the vessels where these containers must be loaded that, which are also numbered. The monitor notifies the crane operator which container is the first in line to be loaded onto the vessel and where it must be placed. After the crane operator has transferred the container onto the vessel based on the tallyman’s instructions, the tallyman enters the given move into the management system. The management system brings up the next container for loading, updates the loading queue and sends the updated information to the crane operator's workstation. The loaded container is deleted from the queue. After all containers have been processed, the crane operator proceeds with the next task. The given program is currently in operation at the Ust-Luga container terminal. SOLVO is confident that the new capability will not only increase productivity but also the overall quality of vessel container loading/unloading operations.
