Système U adopts Aldata’s PDA-based Voice-Directed Warehousing

02.04.2009

Système U, one of France’s largest grocery retailers, is to deploy 900 new PDAs as part of its extended roll out of the G.O.L.D. Vocal PDA solution from Aldata, a leading provider of software solutions for the retail industry

The deployment forms part of a strategy to migrate from voice-dedicated terminals, installed in 2004, to multi-modal PDAs.

Aldata collaborated on the Système U implementation with TIMCOD, the hardware supplier and mobile systems integrator responsible for Système U’s WiFi infrastructure and network equipment. The Motorola WT4090 PDA was selected for the voice-order picking project. Both TIMCOD and Motorola are members of the Aldata Mobility Alliance.

Ronan Le Corre, Logistics Director, Système U, said, “Aldata’s G.O.L.D. Vocal has already delivered great benefits to our business, and IT strategy for our warehouse operations. The solution has boosted productivity and efficiency, and the extended roll out of PDA’s will deliver even greater returns. A key benefit has been the reduction in time required for staff training, which is very important when you take into consideration temporary and seasonal staff. And the multi-modal nature of the PDA means it has greater applicability to other key warehouse operations.

“Système U have recognised the business benefits that Aldata’s G.O.L.D. Vocal can deliver – reduced costs and increased productivity,” said Allan Davies, CMO, Aldata. “In combining Système U’s WMS management with G.O.L.D. Vocal PDA for inventory selection, Système U has created a sophisticated system that optimises the movement of product and workers so that inventory gets to stores as quickly and accurately as possible.”

G.O.L.D. Vocal PDA is the second generation of Aldata’s highly successful Vocal solution, which is used by more than 6,000 picking operators. Vocal PDA permits a wider choice of operator terminals, and is already certified for use on many of the industry’s leading PDA platforms, including LXE and Motorola. G.O.L.D. Vocal PDA is increasingly being used as a single solution for warehouse applications. Its multi-modal functionality means users can interact with the system via screen, pistol, keyboard, barcode reader – 1D and 2D – Datamatrix, electronic tag reader (RFID), voice and photography. Each operator only needs to learn to use one device for multiple levels of applications, including voice-directed operations. This means they are more effective and faster, resulting in both short and long-term productivity gains.
