Factors you should consider when implementing a WMS

18.08.2021

Various factors make a WMS project successful. People play a decisive role in this.

According to the WMS Market Report Compact 2020, published by the Warehouse Logistics Team of Fraunhofer IML, the goals of a WMS introduction include achieving a lower error rate and increasing productivity. However, in order to achieve these goals, you need more than a modern WMS that is optimally adapted to the company's warehouse processes. So what are the factors that ultimately lead to a successful WMS project?

Viewed soberly, a warehouse management system is nothing more than a technical component for optimizing warehouse processes. However, the technology should operate correctly in order to deliver its full benefits. What, for example, does a pilot gain from the powerful technology in his aircraft if he does not know how to press the right buttons at the decisive moment? Not as dramatic, but similar, is the situation with the use of a warehouse management system in companies.

Ultimately, the new WMS can only fulfil its purpose optimally if the employees understand how to use the system's functions correctly. The prerequisite for this is that the employees accept the warehouse management system by clearly contributing to the improvement of their work processes. Therefore, it is advisable to involve employees of different levels in the evaluation process at an early stage.
