»Logistics Application Service« Project: SAP logistics software for Roche

Together with Körber Supply Chain Consulting, the biotechnology company Roche has harmonized and standardized its logistics. What used to be 270 processes have been transformed into eleven main processes in one central SAP solution.

Roche is one of the world’s largest biotechnology companies and has two divisions under one roof: Diagnostics and Pharmaceuticals. Globally, Roche has 20 production sites and 27 R&D (research and development) sites. The headquarters with more than 10,000 employees is located at the Basel & Kaiseraugst site. The »LAL« (Logistics Application Landscape) project involves introducing an SAP-based software solution for site logistics at the Basel & Kaiseraugst site.

Last but not least, impetus for the project was provided by the site development in Basel & Kaiseraugst, including various structural changes and new buildings. The aim was to harmonize site logistics processes and standardize systems in order to be optimally positioned for the future. The use of SAP standard solutions was also designed to take into account the corporate strategy of a future SAP S/4HANA environment.

Eleven main processes and one central SAP solution

During the LAL project, the former 270 processes spread across 13 applications have now been harmonized into eleven main processes in one central SAP solution (with the SAP EWM, SAP TM and SAP YL modules). This enables site logistics to offer its internal customers at Roche end-to-end logistics solutions in which services can be configured from seven central modules.

The core contains services in the areas of warehouse management, internal & external transport management, yard management and customs clearance, which are mainly mapped using SAP via the modules SAP EWM (Extended Warehouse Management), SAP TM (Transport Management) and SAP YL (Yard Logistics).

SAP UI5-based »Service Portal«

In addition to the use of the standard modules SAP TM, SAP EWM and SAP YL, the SAP solution architecture consists of the SAP UI5-based »Service Portal« developed for Roche, which serves as the central entry point for order recording and monitoring of all internal customers (i.e. the employees at the Basel & Kaiseraugst site). In addition, the Körber add-ons K.Motion S/CEP were used to connect the CEP providers and K.Motion S/TCS to map internal transports on the premises of the Basel & Kaiseraugst site.

Phase 1 of the LAL project came into productive use in February 2022. The subsequent optimization phase went live in February 2023. Work is currently underway on further phases of LAL. With the new construction of the pRED research center, LAL will in future be the central platform for the logistical supply of the pRED center and will thus take over control of all the material flows. In addition, another warehouse system is currently being replaced, and will be displayed using the SAP EWM of the LAL solution in the future.
