How to tell if logistics software is genuinely cloud-based
02.06.2026
Find out how to spot genuine cloud solutions in logistics and how to avoid misleading claims.
Is there actually such a thing as »fake cloud software«?
For example, in logistics.
Yes. Because not every piece of software labelled ‘cloud software’ actually contains real cloud software!
Some providers describe their solution as a cloud application, even though technically it merely:
is operated in a data centre and is still partly based on traditional virtualisation solutions such as VMware and uses a so-called ‘fat client’.
How can you recognise genuine cloud software?
1) 100% web-based
Genuine cloud applications run entirely in the browser, regardless of the device or operating system.
2) No virtualisation required on the customer’s end
- Neither VMware nor other virtual machines are necessary to use the software via the internet.
3) Rental model instead of a licence model
- Cloud solutions are usually offered as a subscription.
- As required by law, this includes all maintenance, update and operating costs for maintaining the software. (see tenancy law)
4) Can be tested immediately
- A genuine cloud solution can usually be tested straight away by registering.
- No local installation required. No IT project. No lead time.
Conclusion
If at least one of these points is not met, it is very likely not genuine cloud software, but rather ‘old wine in new bottles’.
Particularly when it comes to strategic IT decisions, it is worth taking a close look – from a technological, economic and long-term perspective.
