KNAPP achieves record turnover and continues on its successful course

18.07.2011

KNAPP, with about 1,800 employees, increased turnover by 30% in fiscal year 2010/2011 to over 272 million euros.

By concentrating on its core competencies and the continuous further development of its products, KNAPP has well established itself on the international market. For the new fiscal year, the goal for turnover is to reach the 300 million euro mark.

KNAPP began fiscal year 2010/2011 very well with a major order for the world's largest OSR Shuttle to date for Hermes Fulfilment, a subsidiary of the Otto Group in Haldesleben, Germany. Dürkopp Fördertechnik GMbH, the world leader in overhead conveyors, was acquired at the beginning of July, 2010. During the course of this expansion, newly integrated competencies could be immediately applied for the order at JCL AG in Werndorf, right in the neighbourhood. In the fall of 2010, the KNAPP opened its newly built corporate headquarters in Hart bei Graz, and in November took a step towards developing the Asian market through a cooperation with the Japanese logistics company, Daifuku. 2010 closed on a happy note with a series of major orders, including preparatory work for a new location in the Netherlands.

Among other things the core competencies are in the sectors pharmacy, retail (food/non-food), fashion and cosmetics. The core markets include all of Europe, North and above all South America – KNAPP has a system in almost every country. The key task in most of these sectors is to manage high numbers of small items. The possibilities here have not yet been completely exhausted, therefore there is still potential for further development. Demand is clearly moving to more and more flexible systems because the logistics branch is also subject to change at an accelerated pace. The challenges for the future are to create complex systems that are more flexible and easier to operate. There are ever clearer signs pointing towards a trend in multichannel distribution; more and more often, one system solution must be operated for several different sales channels.

For years, system and product development have been the core competencies of KNAPP AG, and because this sector expertise is uniquely coupled with technological know-how, custom all-in-one solutions have been developed and implemented all over the world. As a result of this principle of innovation, KNAPP now has a leading role in the area of multi-channel applications. The increasing demands of the market are met by the supply of points of sale (B2B), the direct supply of end customers (B2C) and the associated processing of returns by a single system.

In research and development in the past financial year more than 300 people worked on new and further developments especially in the areas of software and shuttle technology. In this way KNAPP pursues the goal of strengthening and building up its lead in technology.

Among other things, KNAPP developed a new shuttle technology for the multi-deep container storage, which has already been installed in various applications. With the open shuttle concept, an alternative variation for slow transport applications was created as well. In connection to the goods-to-person systems, new picking workstations were created in full consideration of ergonomic guidelines. The further development of KiSoft Vision is also important, which opens up new areas of application in quality improvement.

KNAPP CEO Eduard Wünscher, on the motivation of the company and its employees: "Logistics is a tremendously exciting field because it offers such a high degree of freedom: the task is to build the best systems, but there are always various ways to achieve this. KNAPP employees have an advantage because KNAPP is a supplier of all-in-one solutions; employees can see the end product of their work and not just a small part of the entire process. Additionally, KNAPP is also right on the front of technology and is active internationally – two aspects which provide interesting perspectives for employees. The interaction of these features makes working at KNAPP exciting."

KNAPP has a particularly good order situation. Ten percent growth is expected for 2011. The goal is to carry out challenging reference projects in the usual high quality and to maintain the high level of performance.
