111 years of Dematic – From master tradesman to Global Player

07.10.2011

Dematic is celebrating its 111st anniversary in 2011. 111 years of Dematic – 111 years of market-leading innovations that have influenced the field of intralogistics.

From a small workshop operation to a global player and market leader in numerous international markets – the company has been carving out an impressive corporate and innovation history since its formation, and has plenty more in store for the future.

The company’s history began on 7th March 1900 .Wilhelm Stöhr founded an engineering plant in Offenbach and developed a ground-breaking business concept: Series production of transport systems. He and twelve employees manufactured lifts, conveyor screws, chains for power transmissions as well as a complete range of factory equipment. Following Stöhr’s untimely death, another visionary joined the company in 1920 in the shape of Paul Salzer. Trained in modern manufacturing methods in the USA, he turned the workshop into a modern industrial operation and developed some of the most important innovations in industrial production in Germany, such as the mobile conveyor belt. Expropriated in the Second World War and completely stripped down in 1946, the company’s success story continued unabated. In 1963, the company's employee count already stood at over 500, collaborating with the American conveyor technology manufacturer Rapistan and by 1970 had conquered large parts of the European market.

The company ultimately became a global player in 1970: Demag AG headquartered in Duisburg took over the majority share in Stöhr Förderanlagen Salzer. Thanks to the combined expertise of both machine engineering companies, key innovations were developed. The creation and development of shelf-servicing equipment is just one example.

In 1997, the name Dematic first appeared when the company was renamed Mannesmann Demag Fördertechniksparte. From that point onwards, the company was called "Mannesmann Dematic AG" and operating worldwide. In 2000 during the Mannesmann group was broken up as part of the Vodafone takeover, and Mannesmann Dematic AG was successfully transferred to the ownership of Siemens AG. Just five years later, Siemens sold the logistics division and Triton Beteiligungsberatung purchased shares in Dematic in 2006. In the same year, Dematic once again revolutionised the intralogistics marketplace and introduced the Multishuttle. The registered product name of Multishuttle is now synonymous with shuttle solutions.

Today Dematic is one of the world’s leading providers of logistics automation. As a manufacturer and system integrator, the company delivers a complete range of individual products and systems through to turnkey total solutions as a general contractor. In addition to products such as warehouse and order picking systems, storage and retrieval equipment or lightweight and heavy goods conveyors, integrated solutions are the key focus. In addition, the company offers software and IT solutions for warehouse management and for paper-free order picking. Added to this are service concepts as well as the technical system operations and maintenance. With 4,100 employees, Dematic achieves a worldwide business volume of around 1 billion euros, has production sites in Europe, China, Australia and the USA, and is represented in a total of 35 countries on every continent. The latest coup is the takeover of American competitor HK Systems and the launch of the Multishuttle Move in Summer 2010.
