Dematic Multishuttle Move - Swarm Intelligence for Intralogistics

07.10.2011

Dematic introduces the first prototype for a multi-modal logistics concept within the framework of "cellular conveyor technology" - the Multishuttle "Move".

The innovative, in collaboration with Fraunhofer IML, Dortmund, developed multi-modal logistics concept consists of shuttle vehicles with floor and also rack function. Thus the vehicles can move on rack levels as well as freely within the warehouse. This design provides the basis for the so-called "cellular intralogistics". The replacement of fixed conveyor technology with dynamic, flexible mobile vehicles is, according to leading scientists the start of a paradigm change in intralogistics. The vehicles can transport small goods carriers (600 x 400 mm with a weight of up to 40 kg) and transport them freely in space or in the rack system, without guidelines, induction loops or markers.

The Dematic Multishuttle technology, in connection with the collective intelligence, the so-called swarm intelligence, becomes revolutionary. Here a multitude of these innovative vehicles is employed, which on the basis of a decentralised, agent-based control communicate with each other and - analogue to the so-called swarm intelligence in nature - organise themselves. A corresponding practice test started in June 2011 at Fraunhofer IML. In a reproduced trial hall of 1000 m2 with a length of 65 m, typical for the application in smaller and medium-sized distribution centres or production plants, a Multishuttle shelving system and a specially developed pick station were installed. A swarm of 50 Multishuttle Move will start to work there and support the further exploration of "cellular intralogistics".

The vehicles move their loads with a speed of 1m/s on the floor and 2m/s in the rack system. An intelligent, battery-based energy concept allows each vehicle continuous operation of 4.5 hours without recharging. For floor transport the vehicles, with integrated localisation and navigation technology, determine the shortest route to the target. A newly developed hybrid sensor concept with radio location, distance and inertial sensors provides collisions prevention and assures dynamic and optimal throughput with maximum flexibility.

With the innovative result of the development partnership between Fraunhofer IML and Dematic, meanwhile filed as patent, Dematic underlines, also in the area of cellular conveyor technology, her position as innovative leader for future-oriented automation solutions in intralogistics.
