Intralogistics for 160,000 beverage cases per day

SSI Schäfer has received a customer order from Edeka Südwest for the beverage logistics expert Kempf to build one of the largest and most modern beverage turnover warehouses in Germany. The ultra-modern system will enable the turnover volume to reach record highs in the future.

Edeka Südwest eG has selected SSI Schäfer as the general contractor for the new distribution center. At the Heddesheim location, conveniently situated within the tri-cities area of Mannheim, Heidelberg and Weinheim, the intralogistics specialists from Giebelstadt are creating a high-bay warehouse for the Edeka subsidiary A. Kempf Getränkegroßhandel GmbH with 17 aisles and approx. 20,000 pallet storage locations as well as 6 aisles miniload with approx. 50,000 tray storage locations.

Since 2002, A. Kempf Getränkegroßhandel GmbH is a 100% subsidiary of Edeka Handelsgesellschaft Südwest mbH and beverage provider for the Edeka food retailer in the South-West of Germany. The scope of supply and services by SSI Schäfer for the project consists of the complete realization spectrum from a single source, from general planning, turn-key construction of the buildings, the steel rack construction, the pallets and conveying systems, the robotics for picking, up to and including controlling and warehouse management software. In addition to the highly automated pallet and conveying system, the efficiency of the processes is based on modern automated storage and retrieval systems from the Exyz generation with Orbiter®-Shuttles, a fast mover picking system supported by robotics as well as the logistics software WAMAS® from SSI Schäfer. In addition to this, the beverage warehouse will be equipped with an eletrical monorail for supplying internal needs.

After final completion and start-up in spring 2016, turnover should reach up to 160,000 beverage cases for filled stock and empties in the 24,000 m2 beverage warehouse. Around 1,000 markets from Edeka-Südwest will be supplied from the Heddesheim location. At the final construction stage, a total of up to 250 new work stations will be created in the modern system.
