The team warehouse logistics supported the company Dirak GmbH (Dirak) during the preparation of a performance specification and the preselection of WMS providers. Dirak GmbH is an international company producing and designing customer-oriented, mechanical and electronical fittings, hinges, profiles and locks.

Motive and goal
The increasing requirements on the warehouse management because of the company’s growth prompted Dirak to purchase a new WMS. Up to now the logistic processes had been performed by the individual modules of the ERP system. However, this system does no longer meet future logistic requirements. One aim was to prepare a specification of Dirak’s current and future functional requirements. On the other hand, a call for bids should help to find WMS providers whose products meet the specified requirements and who best suit Dirak's company structure.

Requirement profile
In the first step, the team warehouse logistics carefully recorded and documented the warehouse processes, material and information flows at the location Hasslinghausen.

Finally, during a workshop with Dirak and based on the processed studied in the as-is analysis a target concept was developed which represents the desired WMS processes from goods receipt up to goods issue. Based on this target concept the team warehouse logistics prepared a performance specification. The details were agreed with Dirak during a workshop.

Preselection of WMS providers
To determine potential WMS providers the team warehouse logistics together with Dirak prepared a software requirements profile based on the performance specification and the online WMS selection. The online WMS selection is based on the International Market Survey Warehouse Management Systems. During a workshop the offered functions were compared by means of the requirements profile and the strong and weak points were identified. Furthermore, the providers were checked regarding company size, number of employees, references, etc. At the end five potential providers could be named who best met the requirements. Finally, the team warehouse logistics prepared the tender documents for these providers. Thanks to the clearly specified offer structure these documents allow for the objective comparison and evaluation of the offers regarding price, support and functions.

Result
The results of the consulting by the team warehouse logistics are:

  • A function requirement specification clearly describing all requirements
  • A list of providers whose WMS and business structure meets Dirak’s requirements
  • Tender documents allowing for an efficient comparison of the offers.
