TYROLIT opens shipping warehouse in Czechia

01.06.2016

TYROLIT has opened a new logistics center in Benátky nad Jizerou, Czech Republic, that is equipped with the warehouse management solution SAP EWM - and well prepared for the upcoming challenges lying ahead.

TYROLIT Schleifmittelwerke Swarovski KG, headquartered in Schwaz, Austria, recently opened a new logistics center in Benátky nad Jizerou in Czechia. The logistics software specialist inconso provided thereby a warehouse management system on the basis of SAP EWM 9.0 (Extended Warehouse Management).

As one of the leading manufacturers of bonded grinding, cut-off, sawing, drilling and dressing tools as well as of machine systems for the construction industry, TYROLIT has over 4,600 employees at 29 production plants in 12 countries. Recently, an outbound delivery warehouse for worldwide shipping that adjoins the Czech production location in Benátky nad Jizerou was completed. It consists of a manual high bay warehouse for Euro and industry pallets as well as a manual storage and retrieval system distributed across three levels including various additional areas such as goods receiving and packing areas or consolidation zones. Up to 14 forklifts are used for internal transports of warehouse goods.

A project highlight was the first-time operation with a tool to simulate forklift transports during the system realization. The simulation allows to configure physical forklift properties (drive and hub speeds, delays when meeting in the aisle, processing time for pick-ups and drop-offs) and to model routes, including one-way street regulations. In addition, manual tasks at the workstations (goods receiving, packing stations, shipping) were simulated in SAPEWM while considering the actually measured packing times per material group. Based on these two test components, it was already possible during the system realization to realistically run through the expected daily load for the new warehouse.

In addition to the simulation and testing tools, the automatic height selection is a special feature. When the forklift accesses a compartment in the pallet shelf that can be up to eleven meters high, SAP EWM transmits information about the level height to the forklift. At the touch of a button, the fork can automatically be extended to the height provided by SAPEWM. Doing so prevents errors that could arise if the level were selected manually.

In summary, the project was completed on time and on budget. »inconso’s SAP EWM experts provided excellent consulting throughout the entire project. Through the intensive use of simulation and testing tools, we could be quite certain that our planned logistics concept for the warehouse would work,« emphasized Matthias Hochlenert, Head of Logistics at TYROLIT Schleifmittelwerke Swarovski KG.
