S&P and the Fraunhofer IIS Supply Chain Services Working Group decide to collaborate on research and development activities

S&P Computersysteme GmbH, a provider of intralogistics IT solutions, and the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS' Supply Chain Services group have agreed to collaborate on joint research and development activities in the field of artificial intelligence and data science in intralogistics. Among other things, the joint research will focus on the topic of personnel scheduling and predicting required warehouse staff for a specific time horizon. The first workshops with experts from S&P and Fraunhofer IIS have already been held successfully.

In the future, S&P Computersysteme GmbH and the Working Group for Supply Chain Services of the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS will jointly research issues related to artificial intelligence in intralogistics. Due to the proximity to the customer, S&P not only has insights into their practice-relevant questions, but also into the specific problems, framework conditions and data of intralogistic processes. The Fraunhofer IIS working group for Supply Chain Services can additionally propose suitable solution approaches from its existing knowledge of the method spectrum of AI and machine learning. This exchange of knowledge serves both to prepare technology transfer and, in the long term, should also serve as an impetus for new projects.

»AI-based and application-oriented demand forecasts for logistics, trade and production are becoming increasingly relevant for companies. Together with the experts from S&P, we are now tackling this topic in a practical way and researching efficient solution approaches together. I am already looking forward to further discussions and the plan to jointly bring our solution approaches into application in the long term,« summarizes Prof. Dr. Philipp Gölzer (Business Unit Coordinator »Digitalized Production« at the Fraunhofer IIS Supply Chain Services Working Group).

»We are convinced that the collaboration with the experts at Fraunhofer IIS will provide new insights and impetus for future innovations in intralogistics. In this regard, our first joint workshop already showed us which potentials in the warehouse need to be uncovered with the help of AI and what is possible. The entire S&P team is already looking forward to further research activities«, Rémy El Abd (Managing Director at S&P Computersysteme GmbH) agrees with Prof. Dr. Gölzer.

About the Fraunhofer IIS Supply Chain Services Working Group

The Fraunhofer IIS Supply Chain Services Working Group optimizes organizations, their processes, business models and strategies by combining economic methods and technological solutions with mathematical methods and models: At its locations in Nuremberg, Munich, and Bamberg, the working group designs data spaces for networked overall systems and rapidly deployable IoT prototypes, further develops state-of-the-art data analytics methods in concrete applications, and supports the organizational and strategic realization of digital transformation. As a working group of the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS, the largest institution of the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, the staff can draw not only on the institute's own economic competencies and analytics expertise, but also on the institute's comprehensive technological know-how in the field of »cognitive sensor technology« with its research regarding sensor technology, data transmission technology, data analysis methods as well as data utilization.
