dm drogerie markt automates with TGW Logistics

23.02.2026

In the Upper Austrian town of Kronstorf, TGW Logistics is implementing a highly-automated fulfillment center for dm drogerie markt.

  • Intelligent robots will handle storage and retrieval, transport and picking in the fulfillment center in Kronstorf (Upper Austria).
  • Innovative power, system performance and robotics expertise as central criteria in the decision to rely on TGW Logistics as warehouse automation partner.
  • Cooperation among equals and a shared understanding of values form the basis for the collaboration between the two companies.

Following the go-live in the summer of 2028, this central location will supply all of the drugstore retailer's stores in Austria, Italy and Slovenia, distributing across borders for the first time. This showcase project is the largest single investment in the history of the dm country group and will significantly reduce throughput times and increase efficiency for the long term.

Unifying power

dm regards its relationship with customers and employees as a partnership, an approach that has been reflected in their familiar slogan »Hier bin ich Mensch, hier kauf ich ein« (»Here I can be myself, here I like to shop«) since 1992.

»TGW Logistics has developed a custom solution that is tailored to our needs and is highly persuasive in terms of performance, innovation, flexibility and quality,« emphasizesPatrick Aichinger, Head of International Logistics at dm.

»We are now optimally prepared for future product range adjustments and quantity changes.« »We are delighted that dm drogerie markt found our experience, our robotics innovations and our software competence so compelling,« addsMartin Waldenberger, Chief Sales Officer of the Customer Unit Central Europe at TGW Logistics. »The project in Kronstorf marks the beginning of a close collaboration between our two companies.«

Intelligent robots for storage, picking and transport

A shuttle warehouse with roughly 260,000 storage locations will constitute the heart of the highly automated fulfillment center that TGW specialists will complete by the summer of 2028. More than 200 robots will handle efficient storage and retrieval of goods. Market orders will be compiled at 16 manual and two robot-supported PickCenter workstations. The innovative picking robot RovoFlex draws on discoveries in the area of machine learning and can switch seamlessly between manual and automatic picking. Moreover, it continues to learn with each new gripping operation and thus increases performance and efficiency.

A fleet of 80 mobile robots will not only handle the transport of goods, but they will do so entirely autonomously thanks to intelligent software. The material flow controller and the Warehouse Control System (WCS) will also be supplied by TGW Logistics.

Focus on energy efficiency

Measures to increase energy efficiency are an integral part of the project, with the goal of achieving certification in the GOLD category from ÖGNI (the Austrian Sustainable Building Council). The eco mode will automatically adjust the speed of the system to the current demand, while the standby function will switch off modules that are temporarily not in use. In case of lower capacity utilization, the entire system can be shut down with the push of a button.
