Vanderlande Industries wins major baggage handling contract at JFK Airport

31.03.2011

Vanderlande Industries announces that it has been awarded a contract for the design and installation of a new airport baggage handling system at Terminal 4 at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.

The contract is scheduled for completion in March, 2013. Ewout Cassee, President of Vanderlande Industries Inc., said “We are very proud to make a major contribution to the modernization of the Terminal 4 operations. The new baggage handling system with a capacity of 6,500 bags per hour, will guarantee smooth baggage flows resulting in an improved passenger experience.” Vanderlande Industries has excellent Project Management capabilities that give any customer the confidence their project will be completed within schedule and budget. The well recognized Delivering Certainty® of Vanderlande Industries together with the high quality of the various baggage handling products were reasons for the customer to award this project to Vanderlande Industries.

State of the art baggage handling system

With more than 50 years experience in airport baggage handling systems, Vanderlande Industries is one of the world’s leading turnkey integrators of baggage handling systems. Vanderlande Industries has implemented more than 50 system solutions in the USA and continues to grow every year. This project at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York includes 14,000 feet (4.200 meters) of new conveyors, includes the integration of 10 automated screening machines as part of the new airport baggage handling system and adds six more high quality baggage carousels. Vanderlande did similar projects at, amongst others, George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Chicago O’Hare International Airport.

Improvement of travel experience

The new airport baggage handling system will manage outbound, inbound and transfer baggage for Terminal 4 and will significantly contribute to the improvement of the travel experience at the airport. In 2010, Delta Air Lines made the decision to consolidate their international flights on Terminal 4, which will reduce most of the transfer to other terminals and will be a major improvement for travelers’ experience with connecting flights at JFK. With this new baggage handling system, Terminal 4 is preparing to serve the increasing number of passengers that fly to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.

JFKIAT LLC, which operates Terminal 4 at John F. Kennedy International Airport, is wholly owned by Schiphol USA, Inc., a subsidiary of Amsterdam-based Schiphol Group. JFKIAT is the only private, non-airline company to be selected by the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey to operate a terminal at JFK. The 1.5-million-square-foot Terminal 4 reached an annual passenger volume of 9.8 million air travelers in 2009. Terminal 4 is one of the largest terminals in the New York area, serving nearly 40 international and domestic airlines. The terminal opened in May 2001 after undergoing a $1.4 billion redevelopment, transforming the former International Arrivals Building (IAB) into a first class air terminal. For this project the baggage carousels were delivered by Vanderlande Industries. In February 2007, Vanderlande Industries was invited back for JFKIAT to work on the outbound system. The contract for this new project is signed with Bovis Lend Lease LMB, Inc., the Construction Manager in charge of issuing and managing the contract. Delta Air Lines will be the largest end- user of the Terminal. The completion date for this major project is scheduled for March 2013.
