History

RedPrairie was founded in 1975 as a consultancy and software development company dedicated to providing customer-specific warehouse and distribution solutions. That focus has broadened over the years to include the total supply chain, but is still totally dedicated to helping customers achieve real, measurable results with our solutions.

Initially the company was known as McHugh Freeman & Associates. It was a pioneer in the automation of storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS) for warehouses and distribution centres. By the mid-1980s, McHugh Freeman had used its accumulated expertise to create one of the first comprehensive packaged warehouse management systems (WMS). It combined over a decade of warehouse management consulting and software development into a packaged solution for rapid deployment in Tier One warehouses and distribution centres.

In 1989 McHugh Freeman became part of Pinnacle Automation, a leader in warehouse management and material handling solutions. Pinnacle’s investment allowed the company to expand its vision to include other components critical to supply chain execution excellence. In January 1996 McHugh Freeman acquired Weseley Software, the developer of one of the industry’s most advanced transportation management and optimisation solutions. In August of 1997, McHugh Freeman and Weseley consolidated into a single entity, McHugh Software International, Inc.

In April 1998, McHugh Software International acquired Software Architects Inc. (SAI). SAI had developed a WMS for the Hi Tech and 3PL industries based on unique component-based, event-driven technology. RedPrairie has employed this unique architecture across its product line to provide unmatched configurability and flexibility for the logistics industry.

In May 1998, McHugh Software International acquired Gagnon & Associates, a recognized leader in productivity solutions through its labour management systems and services. This acquisition completed the company’s transformation into a full line supply chain solutions provider.

In October of 1998, the private equity firm Advent International, along with GE Capital, purchased a significant minority equity position in McHugh Software International. The company was spun off from Pinnacle to concentrate on its vision of supply chain solutions, integrating warehouse management, labour management and transportation management into a suite of software and services to maximise logistics excellence across the enterprise and extended supply chain.

In May 2002, the company revolutionised the supply chain solutions industry by totally aligning its corporate culture, processes and products to deliver superior, measurable logistics results for its customers, which the company is willing to guarantee through a shared risk-reward program. This approach is so fundamentally different from other software providers that only a new company name could adequately signify this transformation. Therefore, on May 22, 2002 McHugh Software International changed its name to RedPrairie Corporation.

In February 2004 RedPrairie significantly increased its size and global presence with the acquisition of LIS, a leading European SCE provider based in the United Kingdom. This acquisition established RedPrairie as a major local provider for Europe, with multi-lingual sales and support offices in several European countries. The previous LIS group is now RedPrairie’s Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) division. Together with the opening of an Asia / Pacific headquarters in Shanghai, China in December 2003, this acquisition has established RedPrairie as a leading global provider of end-to-end supply chain technology solutions.
